Spherical Demons: Fast Surface Registration

We present the fast Spherical Demons algorithm for registering two spherical images. By exploiting spherical vector spline interpolation theory, we show that a large class of regularizers for the modified demons objective function can be efficiently implemented on the sphere using convolution. Based on the one parameter subgroups of diffeomorphisms, the resulting registration is diffeomorphic a...

Sulcal set optimization for cortical surface registration

Flat mapping based cortical surface registration constrained by manually traced sulcal curves has been widely used for inter subject comparisons of neuroanatomical data. Even for an experienced neuroanatomist, manual sulcal tracing can be quite time consuming, with the cost increasing with the number of sulcal curves used for registration. We present a method for estimation of an optimal subset...

Hierarchical Matching of Cortical Features for Deformable Brain Image Registration

This paper builds upon our previous work on elastic registration, using surface-to-surface mapping. In particular, a methodology for finding a smooth map from one cortical surface to another is presented, using constraints imposed by a number of sulcal and gyral curves. The outer cortical surface is represented by a map from the unit sphere to the surface which is obtained by a deformable surfa...

Encoding Cortical Surface by Spherical Harmonics

There is a lack of unified statistical modeling framework for cerebral shape asymmetry analysis in literature. Most previous approaches start with flipping the 3D magnetic resonance images (MRI). The anatomical correspondence across the hemispheres is then established by registering the original image to the flipped image. A difference of an anatomical index between these two images is used as ...

Estimating Cortical Surface Motion Using Stereopsis for Brain Deformation Models

We present a method for estimating the 3-D structure of the cortical surface using an operating microscope whose binocular optics are fitted with two CCD cameras. The cortical surface is then tracked over time and the measured displacement can be used to drive FEM-based models for the recovery of subsurface brain deformations. We show the efficacy of this technique on a clinical case.
